One of my favorite hobbies is playing the miniatures wargame Warhammer 40,000. It is a game that can be played by as few as two people and can grow to encompass several people in what is called an Apocalypse (or Apoc) game.

It has been described as taking place in the grim darkness of the far future, in which humanity fights spectacular battles across the galaxy to defend its place among the stars. Arrayed against the might of mankind are the many different alien races and the malignant forces of Chaos.

It is a truly vast hobby that involves not only the miniatures game, but also dozens of novels, audiobooks, graphic novels, and video games, to name a few (all of which I also enjoy).

To begin playing the miniature wargame, one needs access to the rule books and a number of varied miniatures to represent the players' chosen army, as well as some terrain to represent the battleground. The miniatures are plastic, purchased unbuilt on sprues, and unpainted. It is necessary (and quite fun, in my opinion) to assemble the models with selected weapon loadouts and then paint them.
